Work Boot Magazine’s guides are based on research. We do not test products hands-on: we do not buy, wear, or lab-test the boots we list, and we do not receive free products from brands in exchange for coverage. This page explains what we do instead.
How we shortlist products
- Manufacturer information: we read the brand’s own product pages and spec sheets for materials, construction, toe type, sole, waterproofing, weight and sizing.
- Safety ratings and certifications: where a boot is sold as safety footwear, we note the standard the manufacturer states (such as ASTM F2413, electrical hazard, or CSA). We report these as the brand’s stated rating; we do not certify them ourselves.
- Customer reviews: we look for recurring patterns in verified buyer reviews, such as fit, break-in, durability and sizing issues, rather than relying on any single review.
- Availability and price: we only list products that are available at the time we update a guide.

- Fit and sizing options (including wide sizes)
- Stated safety features
- Waterproofing and materials
- Comfort features as described by the manufacturer and buyers
Scores and rankings
Any rating or ranking on our site is an editorial judgment based on the research above. It is not the result of a lab test.
